What moves the price

  • Size. Height and trunk width set how long the job takes and what equipment it needs.
  • What's nearby. A tree over the house, a fence or a power line comes down in small pieces, which takes longer.
  • Access. If a truck can't reach the tree, the wood goes out by hand.
  • The stump. Removal often leaves the stump. Grinding it is usually priced separately.
  • The wood. Hauling everything away costs more than leaving it cut to firewood length.
  • Timing. Storm and after-hours work usually costs more than a scheduled job.

Questions to ask before work starts

  • Can you send proof of liability insurance? Check that it's current before anyone climbs.
  • Is the quote in writing, and does it include cleanup, haul-off and the stump?
  • If the stump is getting ground, have buried lines been marked?
  • Inside city limits? Ask whether the city needs a permit for a large tree.

Removing an oak

Oak wilt is killing oaks across central Texas, and a fresh wound is one way it reaches a healthy tree. The Texas A&M Forest Service guidance is to paint every wound and fresh stump on an oak right away, in any season, and to cut and dispose of a red oak that died of oak wilt quickly, before it can spread spores.
